Unlike the Native, which loses a half inch of it's already shorter blade to it's choil, I like how the Centofante's blade edge is almost continuous from handle to tip and has an effective choil that won't abrade my pants pockets. The blade locks up very tight--you have to really pull on it hard to get a wee bit of wiggle and that occurs only if I'm not holding the handle real tight (don't try that at home, kids) and as a result, the liner lock in the very light weight handle is allowed to flex. That's not likely to happen in 'real world' usage and I think it's an inevitable trade off, due to the knife's light weight. Plus it's more a case of me, pushing it (not abusing) it to see what it's limits might be. Having a steel liner w/o excessive added weight is another plus.
So this is a very light weight, pocket friendly knife that has more style than most Spydercos (that's not saying much) but still with all the utility you expect from Spyderco. No it's not screw down construction--it's pinned, but at this price point, that's not unusual and I have a pretty good sense that it'll last a good while. Lots of 'bang for the buck'.
No, as said before this review, the handle's not the grippiest, but it's more than ample and safe--it has it's own stylish flair too. I could see that if you're really rough, the snazzy 'Syder' inlay could conceivably come out, but just remember these two words 'crazy glue'! Again unlikely under normal use, but Spyderco has great service and if it came out and you lost it, Spyderco would most certainly send you a replacement--they're great that way.
I have a lot of knives, including folders that cost many more times than this one, but I'd have no qualms about carrying this everyday. The blade/edge position in relation to the handle (ergonomics) is very good and holding it in traditional style, it's great for just about any medium strength task--meat, fruit, whittling, I'd even cut roses or saplings--heck it's VG10--a strong steel. I don't expect to get into a knife fight and I'd never bring even this knife to a GUN fight, but nonetheless, you can very quickly, with one hand, change position to 'fighting' and with over 3 inches of edge and the blade already canted forward (outward) a bit, keep most predators well beyond arm's length. It opens fairly quickly, not as fast as the more expensive Spydercos' with bronze phosphor washers, but it's still smooth and fairly fast out of the box--with time, it'll just get faster.
The knife looks nice --'classy'--enough that when you cut a price tag off after buying something at the register, the clerk probably won't scream 'POLICE!
Anyway, to make a long review longer and risk alienating my wife (lol), the Centofante III offers a great combination of ergonomics, construction quality, style, utility and the VG10 steel is pretty darn good quality stuff--it' been around a while, resists corrosion well, stays pretty and you don't have a 'baby'it. It holds an fine edge well and doesn't require high tech tools or an hour to restore a keen edge--not that it will get dull on you quickly. I also like how when I'm around guys who know knives, they're surprised that this pretty, 'stylin' knife is actually a Spyderco--typically the ugly ducklings of the 'better knives' family!
Now I have to stop thinking about buying another one, before all the collectors buy them, only to store them in their boxes and wait for them to appreciate!
It is a pretty significant blade, at +3 inches, and gorgeously designed. But at 2mm thickness, with FRN handle and no steel liner locks, it is LIGHT. Folded, it is a bit longer than some comparable knives (thanks to that 3"+), but its width profile is pretty small, so it really fits nicely in the pocket without getting in the way (though mine came with the clip oriented for tip-down carry, and if you carry it in your pocket that way you're likely to run into the gimping behind the thumb hole a lot. I changed mine to tip-up, which is far more natural for me anyway, but for that you'll need a little torxx screwdriver -- buy one cheap at home depot, for some reason they're a ripoff on amazon). Anyway, the thin hollow-grind blade is simply awesome for a variety of cutting chores (that thinness makes it a great slicer), and it's great steel - VG10 - the whole construction of the knife feels very tight and solid. If you were inclined to criticize this knife, you would probably say that with the thin blade and no steel liners, it's not really up to heavy-duty use. Well, for one thing, it's just not that kind of knife. But for another, with spyderco, just trust the materials, design and workmanship a little bit, because it's all top notch. You can definitely "use" this knife. Some will criticize the FRN handle isn't textured like most of spyderco's other FRN knives, but I, for one, don't really find great purchase on that "volcano grip" surface anyway, keeping a solid grip on the knife comes down 99% to ergonomic design, and in that area the centofante 3 is excellent. And the smooth handle looks beautiful, so I like it just the way it is.
Buy this knife, you will love it!
I just bought my second one to modify (Part of my knife hobby is modding knives I really like. (Think : hot rodding a car you like).
The knife is really great just as it is from the factory. No problems at all. A truly GREAT design.
I could gush on and on but it's all been said here in five hundred some reviews.
(( PPS mini update for we knife nerds : I finished modding #2 knife. Full flat ground. Reprofiled to 0.009 inch behind the edge (nine thousanths of an inch). Roughly 12° per side sharpening angle. Mirror edge to Norton 8000 Edge Pro Apex stone. Denim strop, Hard leather strop . . . =. . . tree topping sharp. Yeeeess ssssirrrr. But that's just me. To each his/her own.))
The only reason I'm posting this is to allay any concerns that the version that comes from Japan (for the Japan market) is any different than the ones for the American market. There is some disclaimer here on the amazon page that goes on about some such.
This second one I just ordered and received shipped direct from Japan with the cool / white Spyderco box with the Japanese Characters on it. The knife is IDENTICAL in every single way to the one I bought years ago in the red and black Spyderco box intended for the American market.
Buy with confidence.
Also I wanted to say don't let the estimated long shipping period from amazon Japan put you off. Though the tracking petered out in Los Angeles the knife came to me in a week which is fantastic ! This was even in the winter while we were getting that frigid sub zero blast across the US. Way to go amazon !
YMMV.
PS: these Centofante Spyderco knives are made in Seki City, Japan which is one of the cutlery centers of the world. If it's made in Seki City and it's an edge tool chances are you will be pleased. Think : Samurai Swords.
"nough said.
