From a set of cooking knives to the CQC pocketknife series, Emerson and Kershaw have teamed up to provide knife enthusiasts high quality, dependable and reliable cutlery. The collaboration combines the precision engineering of Kershaw with Emerson’s uncompromising functional design. Emerson technology, such as a the wave-shaped opening feature, which is designed with Kershaw in mind.

High-Performance Steel

A budget friendly, reliable, top-of-the-line Chinese produced steel, 8Cr13MoV steel has carbon and slightly less nickel for hardness and edge retention. Kershaw’s precision heat treated 8Cr13MoV steel strongly takes and holds an edge and offers wear resistance that can withstand damage from both abrasive and adhesive wear. 8Cr13MoV is a value blade steel featuring high performing characteristics.

Attractive Blade Finish

When a knife design requires a lighter blade to highlight the steel, Kershaw often applies a satin finish. Satin finishes, whether machine-generated or otherwise, leave faint patterns of lines on the steel, and while they sand away the steel’s brightness, they do not remove it as completely as do other finishes. A satin finish also helps reduce evidence of stains and scratches on the blade. Depending on the knife’s design, Kershaw’s non-reflective stonewashed finish may be either pronounced or subtle, but in both cases, it transforms the blade by creating a fade-resistant, scuffed look that hides smudges and fingerprints. A stonewashed finish, achieved by tumbling a blade with ceramic stones, enhances a blade’s rugged appearance as well as its indestructibility during field use.

Fast Deployment

Built into the blade’s backend and similar to a flipper, the unique Wave Shaped Opening system uses a small hook to open the knife immediately as it is withdrawn from the pocket. This feature requires tip-up carry with the knife snug against the rear seam of a pant pocket. When pulled toward the seam, the wave-shaped hook catches on the pocket, deploying the blade for instant use and safe lock up.

Convenient Pocketclip

Kershaw designs pocketclips to fit specific knives according to their weight, intended end use, size, style and hardware. Some knives have multiple carry options, others are more streamlined. The reversible pocketclip allows user to choose to carry knife tip-up or tip-down or to choose on which side knife carries. The user may select either a preferred tip position or a preferred carry side.

Additional Features

knife flippers, flip open, flip open knifes, switchblade knives, assisted opening knives

durable handles, knife handles, handle features, knife handle types

locking system, knife locking, locking knives, kershaw locking, secure locking

Classic Manual Flipper

Flippers on manual-open knives require user to push with quick strength until blade deploys. Some manual flippers disappear when blade deploys, others become a finger guard. Manual flippers appeal to inexperienced users as well as experienced users who prefer a classic, old-style opening. In both cases, ambidextrous flipper works as index finger applies pressure while closed knife sits in palm.

Durable Handle

Stainless steel contains chromium to equip knife handles to withstand rusting and provide corrosion resistance. Stainless steel offers durability and is often used in combination with another material to make for an easier grip. Offering excellent durability, stainless steel knife handles often incorporate etching, patterns, ridges or lines for a less slippery grip. G-10 is a laminate composite, epoxy-filled woven glass fiber that is extremely stable, very lightweight, tough, hard, strong and unaffected by temperature changes. G-10 handles can be decoratively tinted, ground or polished in checkering, lines or other patterns to add texture. Excellent for heavy-use, tactical or utility knives, G-10 can be machined into shape providing a stronger grip.

Secure Locking System

Kershaw’s frame lock design makes knives safer, securer, sturdier and quicker for one-handed blade deployment. The knife handle, or frame, has two metal plates on either side of the blade, and when open, the lockbar butts up against the blade’s backend to prevent blade closure. To close the knife blade, push the frame to the side to unlock the blade and fold the blade back into the handle.

Product Description

The functional, durable, reliable 8Cr13MoV stainless steel spear point blade keeps its sharp edge and is corrosion resistant. Satin blade flats have a faint vertical line pattern and stonewashed blade bevel is rough and scuffed to hide scratches, fingerprints or dirt. Equipped with a thumb disk, a wave shaped opening feature favored among military, rescue and law enforcement knife users, the knife opens as it is removed from the pocket and is built to catch on the pocket seam for an instant open feature. The black G-10 front handle scale is extremely stable, polished, lightweight, easy to hold and grip. The stainless steel back handle scale is an alloy of iron and carbon and contains chromium to withstand rust. Featuring a frame lock and reversible pocketclip for tip-up carry, the manual open CQC-4KXL is perfect for everyday carry, cleaning fish, food preparation, hunting and camping.

Great Emerson design with the wave feature

Great Emerson design with the wave feature
High quality Kershaw blade. Great Emerson design with the wave feature. This is my fastest drawing EDC. I also use a SOG Flash II assisted which I thought was fast to open but since the Emerson Wave feature opens the blade during the pull back it is faster than any knife that requires to be opened by either a spring button or flick. It took only 4-5 tries to master using the Wave. To bring the knife out closed, you pull straight up out of the hip pocket. To use the Wave, you pull at a slight angle backwards. By the time the knife is out of your pocket, the blade is safely out and away. The blade itself is hefty with a secure lock. Great edge from the factory. Like others have said, it is firm with no play. Closes true middle. It is significantly heavier than the Flash II but the build is much sturdier and blade is much thicker. At 3.9" this blade is pushing some states legal limit of 4" concealed which I like. Overall, a great collaboration between two reputable companies.

I think this will be a hot seller for Kershaw. It will surpass all expectations. Truth be told I wasnt nuts about the looks of the knife but I did want to add a wave knife to the collection If you collect knives you ought to have one, just as you should have a knife with an AXIS lock. Back to the looks... Id say form follows function and once you put it into your hands the ergos will tell you that this knife is right. The blade tip was made for one thing, penetration. The gimping is sort of coarse and rounded off, not the best traction plan that I have ever seen but better than some others. I wouldnt have minded this type of gimpoing where the back spacer meets the palm of the hand. I might modify mine and add tubular spaces and open up the knife. Its sturdy as is, it's just a visual preference for me and cost cutting measure for them. The lock is solid, tight, almost a little late compared to some but it wont fold on a spine whack so easily ( probably not ever). It is fairly tight compared to a flipper and starts opening easdier as you use it. The centering in nearly perfect, it's 95% and really that is nitpicking. The Wave cutput and resulting ridge created the perfect place for your thumb. Overall it's a great EDC knife if you want a larger (tactical) folder. The edge was an 8.5 out of 10. This knifes design is tactical, period. This aint Grampas Case knife that he cleaned his pipe out with. This is for opening up other things. It might even replace my edc, the Kershaw 1870, at least they will share the duty. I have 50-60 knives and this is in the top when you look at price, function, quality. Yes a Lionsteel is nice but I dont want to driop it and damage that beautiful machining on the one piece handle, My Almar Sere2000 is nice too, I beat it up a work, It's too nice for work. This one hits that magic point, form, function and price. If you lose it, it's not the end of the world. I really reccomend it.

Update: i will admit that i have a knife and flashlight problem. While i have not found the perfect flashlight, i do believe this is the perfect EDC knife for a myriad of reasons. I have 3 or 4 of theses knives now and am amazed by their durability as well as how long the blade remains sharp. I really have no time for dull knives - it’s like wearing a shoe that has no sole - what’s the point. I have many knives that I can sharpen, but only a select few hold that sharpness. There also seems to be another class of knife that is sharp on day 1 and will never be that sharp again. Thankfully, these blades hold an edge and after years of use are razor sharp. I did break the tip off one trying to free up the head on a string trimmer - which was stupid - but the only tool I had around at the time. I am in love with the self deploying feature when pulling it out of your pocket because I often find that when I need the knife, I don’t have a hand to spare. I am not sure what more you could want in an every day carry knife. Excellent value, durability, and craftsmanship - you do not have to spend $400 to have a good EDC…thank goodness because I am constantly rotating through these as I leave one in the shop, my car and it’s easier to grab another one than look for them.

It has been 30 yrs since my last kershaw carry knife. I love this one. The hook on the backside that deploys the knife as you remove it from a pocket is ingenious and so helpful. I wish there was a lever or lock back blade lock, but the frame lock works well and grows on you. The blade is much better than $30 price tag would lead me to expect.

My CQC-4KXL came today, lightning fast shipping by the way, and I`ve spent the last few hours trying to find one single flaw with this knife and needless to say I was unsuccessful. I have owned a few high-end knives over the years and when you pay $150 and up for a good blade you expect the type of satisfaction that I got with this $40 Emerson collaberation; I'm just amazed at the quality and value of this folder.
First off the fit and finish were spot on and the blade had a great working edge, a few passes on any sharpener or strop will have it razor-like I'm sure. The blade was perfectly centered without me having to adjust the pivot screw and after opening it a few dozen times and hitting it with some nano oil it started to break in wonderfully and it glides open smoothly and locks open with a satisfying "click".
The G-10 scale is grippy and flawless and the stonewash on the frame is a nice upgrade over the bead blasting on the other knives in the series.
This knife isn't exactly lightweight however and if you like your EDC blades to be featherweights then this may not be your knife but personally I boght this as a secondary weapon to my firearm and I like a defensive knife to have some substance to it, that's just me though. That being said this knife isn't heavy by any means, it's just not one of your 2.5oz. carbon fiber and titanium numbers that would cost over $300.
All in all if you want a decent sized blade for EDC and/or defensive use then this is an excellent choice that will do everything required of it and not break the bank in the process. Also it comes from the factory with the stock packing grease and this won't be an issue at all for 99% of folks out there but if you like to take apart your new knives and clean them and apply new oil then this knife, like other Kershaw and Emerson knives, can be disassembled easily with common tools. Darian Ackerman has a YouTube video where he explains the process using an Emerson CQC-7V, check it out if you want to take yours apart and totally strip off the old lubricants and apply new. Kershaw and Emerson have a real winner here with this knife and it would be a deal at $100 so for $40 it's a no-brainer.
